Mouse Cryorecovery

The Jackson Laboratory pioneered cryopreservation and cryorecovery technologies and continues to lead the field decades later. Each year, we successfully cryorecover more than 2,500 mouse strains for researchers worldwide, including strains that are difficult to cryorecover using standard methods. JAX can recover strains from cryopreserved sperm or embryos stored with us, from your or your collaborators' frozen stocks, or from material shipped from other repositories. All mice are cryorecovered at SOPF status and can be shipped directly to you or a collaborator, or maintained as a colony at JAX.

Sperm and Embryo Cryorecovery Service

Our Reproductive Sciences Team has unmatched expertise in recovering live mice from frozen embryos and sperm, with over 12,000 successful embryo transfers performed each year. The team is equipped to harvest, handle, transfer, and recover even the most fragile strains. Live mice can be produced and delivered in as little as 9-12 weeks.

If you need to recover mice from cryopreserved embryos or sperm prepared outside of JAX, including from our Sperm Cryo Kit, please contact us so we can discuss recovery feasibility, optimal recovery strategy, and associated costs.

Sperm Cryorecovery Requirements:
At least one straw of frozen sperm with the target allele(s) that is clearly and accurately labeled and includes a thawing protocol. Oocyte donors should be specified during consultation.

Embryo Cryorecovery Requirements:
At least one straw or vial containing 30+ frozen embryos. Embryos must contain the target allele(s). Straws must be clearly and accurately labeled and include a thawing protocol.

Deliverable:
Standard recovery yields approximately 10 pups of high health status (SOPF). For strains cryopreserved at JAX, we guarantee at least two carriers of the desired allele(s).

Price-Per-Mouse Cryorecovery

Some JAX mouse strains are available for cryorecovery under the Price-Per-Mouse program. Recoveries can be scaled to provide a desired number of carriers beyond the typical two-mouse guarantee. Eligible strains will feature a Price-Per-Mouse identifier button in the order box of their strain data sheet.

What to Expect:

• The minimum number of carriers per order is 2. If you request additional mice, we will scale our cryorecovery to provide you with the desired number of carriers.
• The total number, sex and genotypes will be provided to you prior to scheduling shipment. If more mice are produced than you have requested, you will have the option to receive all generated mice.
• Additional breeding may be required to produce the genotype(s) of interest.
• The mice will be shipped to your institution once the genotypes have been confirmed and the mice have reached weaning age (approximately 12-16 weeks).
